vila_vella
Built from scratch at the beginning of the 13th century. It was organized according to the scheme of Roman cities: a series of parallel and perpendicular streets with a main square as the center; hence its unusual layout compared to other medieval towns.
Plaça Major was the center of social life and economic exchange. Surrounded by houses with porches, it preserves the columns with Gothic elements. The main streets of Vila Vella start from here, including Carrer Major where the poet Joan Margall used to spend his summers.
Around the entire Vila Vella we find the wall that protected the population from attacks. It consisted of 24 towers and 6 access portals. Today you can see some remains of the old wall.
